Section 1

Taking Your Exam

How quickly will I receive my access code?

Instantly — usually within minutes of checkout.

As soon as your card payment is approved, our system automatically emails you the access code along with setup instructions. No manual processing, no waiting for the next business day.

If you don’t see the email within 5–10 minutes, check your spam/junk folder. The email comes from A1 Food Safety. If you still can’t find it, call us at 978-710-0128 or email info@a1foodsafety.com — we’ll resend it right away.

What will I need on exam day?

You’ll need all of the following ready before starting:

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or military ID) or a valid student school ID
  • A laptop or desktop computer — phones and tablets are not supported
  • A working webcam and microphone
  • A strong, reliable internet connection
  • A private room with no other people present

Test your equipment in advance at go.proctoru.com/testitout to avoid surprises on exam day.

What steps should I follow to start my exam?

Follow the detailed instructions ProctorU emails you. ServSafe® also recommends watching the official ProctorU test-taker walkthrough beforehand so you know what to expect: ProctorU walkthrough video.

What time should I log in to start my exam?

Log into your ProctorU account at least 20 minutes before your scheduled exam time. This leaves time for identity verification and the system check without feeling rushed.

Where do I find my exam access code?

Your code is in two places:

  1. The order confirmation email A1 Food Safety sends after your purchase
  2. Your ServSafe® dashboard at servsafe.com — go to “My Exam Access Codes,” select “ServSafe Manager Certification Through ProctorU” as the program, set status to “Available”

If someone else (an employer, for example) gave you a code, contact them directly to retrieve it.

I get an “Invalid Access Code” error — what now?

Make sure you’re using the correct secure link after logging into your ServSafe.com account: servsafe.com/ss/Exams/ProctorU/TakePUOnlineExam.aspx. If you’re still seeing the error after using the correct link, contact ServSafe® customer care at 1-800-765-2122.

What if my computer fails the ProctorU system check on exam day?

Test your computer before exam day at go.proctoru.com/testitout — this is the single best way to avoid problems.

On exam day, if the system check fails you’ll get an option to retry. If it fails twice, ProctorU’s support team will help you troubleshoot.

My exam session was interrupted — how do I get a replacement?

If your exam is interrupted for technical reasons (not test-taking irregularities), ProctorU will create an incident log. To get a replacement access code, contact ServSafe® Customer Care at ServiceCenter@restaurant.org or 1-800-765-2122 (chat or text is fastest). Once you have the new code, schedule a new exam.

Can I get a refund if my system isn’t compatible with ProctorU?

No. Per ServSafe®’s policy, all online product purchases — including online proctored exams — are final, nonrefundable, and nonreturnable. Please test your equipment in advance to confirm compatibility before ordering.

Can I use study materials or notes during the exam?

No. Books, notes, websites, calculators, and other study aids are not allowed during the exam.

Can I have food or drink during the exam?

No. Food and drink are not allowed during the exam.

What actions are not permitted during the exam?

The following are not permitted and may be flagged by ProctorU:

  • Talking or whispering aloud (unless you have an approved accommodation)
  • Moving out of camera view — your face from chin to forehead must stay visible
  • Other people entering your testing area
  • Anyone else talking to you during the exam
  • Looking off-screen for extended periods
  • Using unauthorized study materials, notes, or calculators
  • Taking pictures or screenshots of the exam
  • Copying and pasting content from the exam
  • Using a virtual machine (detected by the system check)
  • Using a secondary monitor — only one monitor is allowed
What happens if my behavior gets flagged?

Your proctor will step in if they observe a prohibited action. Depending on what occurred, the proctor may need to cancel your exam session.

How do I request exam accommodations?

Submit an Exam Accommodation Request Form to the National Restaurant Association before your scheduled exam. If you discover during the exam that you need an accommodation that wasn’t pre-approved, you can request to reschedule. The form is available on the ServSafe® website.

Section 2

Scheduling Your Exam

What happens if I miss my scheduled appointment?

If you’re more than 15 minutes late, your appointment is automatically cancelled. ProctorU will email you, and you can then log back in to reschedule.

Is there a fee for no-shows or last-minute reschedules?

Yes. If you don’t show up, or if you reschedule less than 24 hours before your appointment, ProctorU charges a fee that must be paid before you can book a new session. This fee is set and collected by ProctorU — A1 Food Safety doesn’t control or collect it.

What if no exam slot is available before my certification deadline?

Appointments are first-come, first-served. If no slot is open before your deadline, ServSafe® recommends booking the earliest available time and requesting a deadline extension from your regulatory authority.

I didn’t get a confirmation email from ProctorU.

Check your spam folder first. If it’s not there, request a resend at go.proctoru.com/confirmations/new. You’ll need the email address used when you set up your ProctorU account.

What languages is the exam offered in?

The ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certification Examination with online proctoring is available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

How many questions are on the exam?

The exam has 90 questions total, but only 80 of them count toward your score. The other 10 are unscored pilot questions used to validate future content. You won’t know which is which during the test, so treat every question as if it counts.

What’s the passing score?

70% on the 80 scored questions.

Can I become an online proctor?

No. Online proctors are supplied by ProctorU, not ServSafe®. ServSafe® does have a separate proctor registration program for in-person exams — those proctors must be physically present during the test.

Section 3

Results & Certificates

How do I get my results and certificate?

Your score is usually available almost immediately after you submit. ServSafe® will email you when your score is ready, and if you passed you’ll be directed where to view and print your certificate.

Sometimes the certificate takes up to 24 hours to become available — you’ll get a second email when it’s ready. Check scores anytime at servsafe.com/ss/Exams/CheckScore.

What should I do if I fail the exam?

You’ll need to purchase another online proctored exam (a new access code) and schedule a new session through ProctorU. ServSafe®’s retest rules apply — first two attempts within 30 days, then a 60-day wait, up to four attempts within 12 months.

How do I see results for codes I bought and assigned to others?

Log into your ServSafe® account and go to My Exam Access Codes. Select “ServSafe Manager Certification through ProctorU” as the program, choose your status filter and date range, and enter the examinee’s last name. You’ll only see results for exams that have been completed.

Section 4

Technical Requirements

How do I test my equipment before exam day?

Run the ProctorU equipment test at go.proctoru.com/students/system-metrics/new. This is the same check that runs on exam day, so passing it in advance is the best way to avoid surprises.

What are the system requirements?

You’ll need:

  • A desktop or laptop computer (PC or Mac)
  • A working webcam and microphone
  • A strong, reliable internet connection
  • The ProctorU software (you’ll be prompted to download it before starting)

Not supported: Chromebooks, mobile phones, and tablets cannot be used.

Full requirements at ProctorU’s equipment requirements page.
